An Afternoon with Elly Griffiths
Tue, 31 Jan 2023
Forensic archaeologist Dr Ruth Galloway has seen more than her fair share of bodies, buried by time, or buried by murder. Now one of her closest and oldest friends has disappeared in mysterious circumstances. Is it really possible that Cathbad could be a killer?
Ruth and Nelson's rocky relationship has been catalogued through 15 bestselling, internationally successful crime novels by Elly Griffiths. We're delighted to welcome her to a conversation event with actor David Learner. We'll hear more about her writing style, her plans for the future, her podcast and her new writing companion Pip the cat. Elly has won a host of major awards and now has an international following: among her many trophies are the Edgar Award from the USA, just one of the myriad countries who have taken her to heart.
Fresh from the printers during its very first week of publication there will be the chance to buy personally signed copies of The Last Remains and the now-extensive Ruth Galloway back list as well as Elly's other books, including the Brighton mysteries and the Justice series for younger readers. Our thanks to Niche Books of Huntingdon for being our companion bookseller on the day.
And of course there's time before the event to enjoy food and drink and great company in the wonderful surrounding of the historic Commemoration Hall. Afterwards, there's even time to visit the beautiful Niche Books itself, just up the High Street from the hall.

Tree planting in memory of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip
Mon, 06 Feb 2023 10:00
There will be a tree planting ceremony in Bloomfield Park, to be held on 6th February 2023 to mark the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.
This day has been chosen as it marks the day in 1952 that Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne, following the passing of her father King George VI.
Huntingdon Town Council will plant two oak trees, to symbolise their long lives, and will be fertilised using compost made from the flower tributes left in their memory by residents.
Residents are welcome to join us from 10am in Bloomfield Park.

Huntingdon Pancake Flipathon
Tue, 21 Feb 2023
On your marks, get set, flip!
Every year, Huntingdon Town Council celebrates Pancake Day traditions with a morning full of free pancake fun! We will be looking for contestants to join in with the spectacular Pancake Flipathon! Entering involves flipping your pancake in a pan with as much style as possible around the Market Square – but can you make it to the finish line with your pancake in one piece?
The Flipathon will take place on Tuesday, 21 February 2023, around the boundary of the Market Square, starting at 11am. The event is completely free and is open to individuals of all abilities and ages, as well as teams of four for a Retail Relay. Any speedy flippers will be instantly disqualified, as judging is based purely on flipping style and variety!
The event always kick-starts with Mayors of local market towns taking part in the famous 'Chain Gang' Flipathon! Come along to see who has the most flair and creativity with their pancake flipping techniques!
Medals will be awarded to those in first and second place. Everyone who takes part will receive a small chocolate egg.

The Poorest He: The Putney Debates
Sat, 25 Feb 2023 11:30
375 years ago a remarkable meeting took place in St Mary's Church in Putney. In November 1647 representatives of ordinary soldiers met their generals to discuss what sort of government the country should have in the aftermath of a devastating Civil War.
Some of these men – nicknamed Levellers by their opponents – proposed radical notions for the 1600s, including for the first time that all men should have the vote.
To tie in with our current exhibition on the Levellers, the Cromwell Museum is staging another of its popular dramatisation of key events from the 1600s, in association with the Sealed Knot. In the atmospheric surroundings of Huntingdon Town Hall, amateur actors will bring to life the discussions and debates around democratic ideas which we take for granted today, but were truly revolutionary for their time.
These performances tend to be very popular and places are limited; early booking is advised to avoid disappointment.
Performances take place at 11.30am, 2.30pm and 6.30pm on Saturday 25 February; 11.30am and 2.30pm on Sunday 26 February.
Tickets are £10 for adults; £8 for full time students, under 16s and Museum Members.
Performances last appoximately 75 minutes including a Q&A session. Due to the nature of the subject matter it is not recommended for younger children. Please arrive promptly on the day as latecomers might not be admitted so as to not interrupt what is an immersive performance. Wheelchair users are welcome; please e-mail us after booking so that we can allocate a space for you.
