'All People One': The Levellers

'All People One': The Levellers

Sat, 05 Nov 2022

375 years ago a remarkable meeting took place in St Mary's Church in Putney.

In November 1647 representatives of ordinary soldiers met their generals to discuss what sort of government the country should have in the aftermath of a devastating Civil War.

Some of these men – nicknamed Levellers by their opponents – proposed radical notions for the 1600s, including for the first time in British history the idea that all men should have the vote.

This display, staged for the 375th anniversary of the Putney Debates, gives an introduction to the story of the Levellers, their rise and fall, and their long term impact. It includes original pamphlets, engravings and objects from the Cromwell Museum's collections.

The display runs from 5 November 2022 until 2 April 2023 during normal museum opening hours. Admission is free of charge.

Cromwell Museum Autumn Online Lecture Series 2022 - John Rees on 'The Putney Debates and the Birth of Democracy'

Wed, 09 Nov 2022 19:30

The Cromwell Museum is delighted to announce the 2022 Cromwell Museum Autumn Lecture Series, again being held via Zoom.

At the end of October 1647 a remarkable meeting took place at St Mary's Church in Putney, where representatives of the ordinary soldiers in Parliament's army met with their generals to discuss the constitutional settlement of the nation. These representatives were Levellers, a 17th century radical movement that emerged from the tumult of the Civil Wars, advocating ideas that would be central to the development of democracy. This talk will look at what happened at this meeting and its legacy in the struggle for freedom and democracy across the world today.

John Rees is a broadcaster and writer, author of 'The Leveller Revolution' and Visiting Research Fellow, Goldsmiths, University of London.

This talk will be recorded and put on a private channel after the 'live talk' for ticket holders to view at their leisure if they miss the live talk or wish to view them again.

PLEASE NOTE: These talks will be held online via Zoom. Joining details will be sent out the week before the talk.

Cromwell Museum Autumn Online Lecture Series 2022 - Witches, the Devil & Oliver Cromwell: a talk by Dr Rebecca Warren

Cromwell Museum Autumn Online Lecture Series 2022 - Witches, the Devil & Oliver Cromwell: a talk by Dr Rebecca Warren

Wed, 16 Nov 2022 19:30

The Cromwell Museum is delighted to announce the 2022 Cromwell Museum Autumn Lecture Series, again being held via Zoom.

The 1640s saw a resurgence in witchcraft accusations, with the chaos of Civil War and failng harvest leading to a breakdown in traditional law and order, with people looking for someone to blame for their misfortunes. In East Anglia Matthew Hopkins, the 'Witchfinder General', led a reign of terror over 18 months, accusing many of the crime. What were Cromwell's attitudes to this, and did he have any involvement with the persecution of witches?

Dr Rebecca Warren is a historian of the seventeenth century, specialising in religion in the 1640s and 1650s. She is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Kent and is one of the Cromwell Museum's Advisory Panel. She is currently writing a book on the English church in the Interregnum.

This talk will be recorded and put on a private channel after the 'live talk' for ticket holders to view at their leisure if they miss the live talk or wish to view them again.

Cromwell Museum Autumn Online Lecture Series 2022 - Cromwell’s Head: a talk by Dr Jonathan Fitzgibbons

Cromwell Museum Autumn Online Lecture Series 2022 - Cromwell’s Head: a talk by Dr Jonathan Fitzgibbons

Wed, 23 Nov 2022 19:30

The Cromwell Museum is delighted to announce the 2022 Cromwell Museum Autumn Lecture Series, again being held via Zoom.

Oliver Cromwell's magnificent funeral in 1658 was a regal affair, witnessed by thousands and drawing on all the trappings of state. Yet less than three years later his corpse was removed from Westminster Abbey and 'executed' at Tyburn. This gruesome ceremony launched Cromwell's head on three centuries of extraordinary adventures, from a traitor's pole by Westminster Hall to an exhibition in London's Bond Street, the probings of 'cranial detectives' to the peace of a Cambridge college. This talk tells the story of the head's remarkable journey...

Dr Jonathan Fitzgibbons is Lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of Lincoln. He is the author of 'Cromwell's Head (2008), 'King Charles' Shirt' (2009) and 'Cromwell's House of Lords' (2018). He is a trustee of the Cromwell Association.

This talk will be recorded and put on a private channel after the 'live talk' for ticket holders to view at their leisure if they miss the live talk or wish to view them again.

Light up the Night @ Huntingdon Cremetorium in support of Cruse Bereavement

Light up the Night @ Huntingdon Cremetorium in support of Cruse Bereavement

Tue, 29 Nov 2022 16:00

Huntingdon Crematorium has joined up with Cruse Bereavement Support to host a Light Up the Night evening on Tuesday 29th November between 4pm and 6:30pm.

Light up the Night has been created to give friends and family an opportunity for shared remembrance of loved ones who have died, in a place of unique calm, peace, hope and community.

The idea is quite simple – join us at Huntingdon Crematorium and light a candle in memory or celebration of a loved one, and watch the space be filled with candles. It's truly a moving experience.

It's hoped lighting a dark November night will show off the natural beauty of the site, but also give family and friends an opportunity for shared remembrance of a loved one in a place of unique calm, peace, hope and community.

For a small donation, Cruse will be providing us with LED candles and Huntingdon Town Council will be providing chalk board memory tags which will be provided on the night to be left with the candle, which in turn will then be transferred to our memorial tree for the remainder of 2022, which will be displayed in the crematorium foyer.

All donations will go to support the work of Cruse Berevement Care.

Wed, 30 Nov 2022 19:30

The Cromwell Museum is delighted to announce the 2022 Cromwell Museum Autumn Lecture Series, again being held via Zoom.

Behind the politics, war and religion that we associate with Oliver Cromwell was a man who was devoted to his family. His sons took after their father to one degree or another, but how much do we know about Cromwell's four daughters? The remarkable stories of these four women is revealed by historian and noverlist Miranda Malins, who has brought the eldest and youngest back to life in her first two novels.

Dr Miranda Malins is a writer and historian specialising in the history of Oliver Cromwell, his family and the politics of the Interregnum period following the Civil Wars. She studied at Cambridge University, leaving with a PhD, and continues to speak at conferences and publish journal articles and book reviews. Her novels 'the Puritan Princess' and 'the Rebel Daughter' have proved to be hughly succesful.

This talk will be recorded and put on a private channel after the 'live talk' for ticket holders to view at their leisure if they miss the live talk or wish to view them again.
