| Footway Lighting
There is motorway lighting, highway lighting and footway lighting. Motorway lighting is maintained by the Highways Agency, highway lighting is maintained by the County Council and footway lighting is provided and maintained by the Town Council.
However, in the majority of cases schemes for footway lighting may have been provided by the Town Council but are "adopted" by the County Council for long term maintenance.
If the lighting column has a "CCC" number on it then it is maintained by the County Council and you can report any faults or problems to 01223 717723. If however the lighting unit has a "PC" number on it then it is a Town Council unit and any faults should be reported to the Town Clerk's Office on 01480 388688. |
| Comment on Local Planning
The District Council is the planning authority but the Town Council is consulted on planning applications within the town of Huntingdon. The Town Council considers all applications referred to them and recommends to the District Council whether they should be approved, refused or approved subject to conditions. The District Council is not bound to agree with the views of the Town Council - and quite often chooses not to. Representations can be made to the Town Council who will take those comments into account before making its formal recommendations to the District Council. The Town Council also has the opportunity to comment on Local Plans and County Structure Plans and on proposals within adjoining parishes which are likely to have a significant impact on Huntingdon as a town. |
Closed Churchyards
When burials can no longer take place in churchyards because they have become
full, then those churchyards can be declared "closed" and the maintenance of
them passes to the local Town or Parish Council. In Huntingdon the Town Council
has, through this mechanism, become responsible for the closed churchyards of
All Saints (by the Market Square), St Mary's (opposite Castle Hill House), St
John's (towards the northern end of the High Street) and All Saints, Hartford
(the Hartford parish Church by the riverside).

Public Clocks
A Town or Parish Council has power to provide parish clocks or take over the maintenance of parish clocks provided by others. The Town Council is responsible for the clocks on the Town Hall (on Market Hill), the clock on St Mary's Church and the recently installed Rotary Millennium Clock in the High Street at the junction with St Benedict's Court/Chequers Court.

War Memorials
The famous "Thinking Soldier" War Memorial on Market Hill, provided by public subscription and substantial financial contribution from the Women's Institute, is now maintained by the Town Council. It has recently been renovated and enhanced by a District Council scheme (with the aid of some Town Council funding) for the overall improvement of Market Hill. The Town Council is also responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the South African War Memorial which is set into the churchyard wall of All Saints Church at its junction with George Street.
